8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb

Day By Day Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2,100m) to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)

Your adventure begins with a morning transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing park registration formalities, drive to the trailhead and start your trek through the lush rainforest. Towering trees, vibrant vegetation, and the chance to spot black-and-white colobus monkeys make this an exciting introduction to the mountain.

Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m) to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail ascends into the heath and moorland zone. As the landscape opens up, enjoy spectacular views of Mount Meru rising above the clouds. The gradual climb allows your body to begin adjusting to the increasing altitude while providing incredible scenery along the way.

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)

Today’s trek crosses the beautiful Shira Plateau, one of the largest high-altitude plateaus in the world. The route is relatively gentle, allowing you to enjoy panoramic views of Kibo Peak. In the afternoon, an optional acclimatization hike can be taken to further improve your chances of a successful summit.

Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) to Barranco Camp (3,900m) via Lava Tower (4,600m)

This is one of the most important acclimatization days on the mountain. The trail steadily climbs to Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic rock formation standing at 4,600 metres. After reaching this high point, descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adapt to the altitude and significantly increases summit success rates.

Hiking Time: 7–9 hours
Highest Point: Lava Tower (4,600m)
Habitat: Semi-desert and Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barranco Camp (3,900m)

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,900m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Begin the day by tackling the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the Lemosho Route. While it may appear intimidating, it requires no technical climbing and is safely navigated with the assistance of your experienced guides. After reaching the top, continue across valleys and ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

A steady ascent brings you to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch and spend the remainder of the day resting and preparing your equipment. An early dinner and bedtime are essential as you prepare for the challenging summit climb ahead.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Descend to Mweka Camp (3,080m)

Shortly after midnight, begin your summit attempt under a sky filled with stars. The climb is gradual but demanding as you make your way to Stella Point on the crater rim before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Witnessing sunrise from the roof of Africa is an unforgettable experience. After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs, begin the descent to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.

Summit Altitude: 5,895m
Total Trekking Time: 12–16 hours
Overnight: Mweka Camp (3,080m)

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,080m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

After breakfast, enjoy your final descent through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, receive your well-earned summit certificate and bid farewell to your mountain crew. A transfer will then take you back to Arusha or Moshi, where a hot shower, comfortable bed, and celebration await.

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
