Overview

The Scenic “Whiskey Route”

The Machame Route – 6 to 7 Days Kilimanjaro Climb is one of the most popular and scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” it is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, excellent acclimatization profile, and high summit success rates. The trail traverses a remarkable variety of ecological zones, including lush rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone.

Following the proven “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization strategy, the Machame Route offers climbers a greater chance of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Machame Route – 6 to 7 Days Kilimanjaro Climb

Day By Day Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,000m)

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Machame Gate. After completing registration formalities, start your trek through the lush rainforest. Towering trees, hanging moss, and colourful birdlife create an unforgettable introduction to Africa’s highest mountain. Keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the forest canopy.

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Overnight: Machame Camp (3,000m)

Day 2: Machame Camp (3,000m) to Shira Camp (3,840m)

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation becomes more sparse as magnificent views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau emerge. The steady ascent allows your body to gradually adapt to the increasing altitude while enjoying some of Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular scenery.

Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Overnight: Shira Camp (3,840m)

Day 3: Shira Camp (3,840m) to Barranco Camp (3,900m) via Lava Tower (4,600m)

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the mountain. The route climbs steadily to Lava Tower, a striking volcanic rock formation at 4,600 metres. After reaching this high point, descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to the altitude and greatly increases the likelihood of a successful summit.

Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Highest Point: Lava Tower (4,600m)
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barranco Camp (3,900m)

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,900m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

The day begins with the exciting ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. Although steep in places, it is a non-technical climb and offers incredible views across the mountain. After reaching the top, continue through valleys and ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp, where you can rest and enjoy the stunning alpine scenery.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Karanga Camp (4,035m)

7-Day Route Acclimatization Option

Climbers choosing the 7-day itinerary benefit from additional acclimatization time around Karanga Camp. This extra day allows the body to adjust more effectively to the altitude, increasing comfort and improving summit success rates.

Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Today’s trek leads to Barafu Camp, the final campsite before the summit attempt. The trail gradually ascends across the barren alpine desert landscape. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch, organize your equipment, hydrate well, and rest in preparation for the challenging summit night ahead.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Descend to Mweka Camp (3,080m)

Around midnight, begin the most challenging and rewarding stage of your climb. Moving slowly under a sky full of stars, ascend toward Stella Point on the crater rim. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres.

Witness a spectacular sunrise from the Roof of Africa before taking photos and celebrating your achievement. Afterward, descend back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved night’s sleep.

Summit Altitude: 5,895m
Total Trekking Time: 12–16 hours
Overnight: Mweka Camp (3,080m)

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,080m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

After breakfast, enjoy your final descent through Kilimanjaro’s beautiful rainforest. Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificate and celebrate your achievement with your mountain crew. A transfer will then take you back to Moshi or Arusha for relaxation and reflection on your incredible journey.

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
