Overview

The Classic “Coca-Cola Route”

The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it remains one of the most popular choices for climbers seeking a comfortable trekking experience. Unlike all other Kilimanjaro routes, Marangu is the only route that provides accommodation in mountain huts rather than tents, making it particularly appealing during wet or colder seasons.

The route follows a well-defined trail through lush rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.

Route Options

5-Day Marangu Route

The shortest itinerary available on the Marangu Route. Suitable for experienced trekkers but offers limited acclimatization time.

6-Day Marangu Route

Includes an additional acclimatization day, significantly improving altitude adaptation and summit success rates.

7-Day Marangu Route

The most relaxed itinerary, providing maximum acclimatization time and the highest likelihood of reaching the summit successfully.

Summit Success Rates

  • 5-Day Marangu Route: 50–60%
  • 6-Day Marangu Route: 70–80%
  • 7-Day Marangu Route: 80–90%

Marangu Route – 5 to 7 Days Kilimanjaro Climb

Day By Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate for registration. The trek starts through a beautiful rainforest filled with towering trees, colourful birdlife, and playful colobus monkeys. The lush forest environment offers a gentle introduction to the mountain.

Upon arrival at Mandara Hut, climbers can take an optional walk to Maundi Crater, which provides panoramic views of northern Tanzania and neighbouring Kenya.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Overnight: Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail enters the heath and moorland zone. As the vegetation changes, giant lobelias and senecio plants begin to dominate the landscape. Spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak accompany you throughout the day as you steadily gain altitude.

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Overnight: Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (6 & 7-Day Routes)

This important acclimatization day is designed to help your body adapt to the increasing altitude. A short hike towards the Saddle, located between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks, allows you to climb higher before returning to Horombo Hut to rest. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly improves your chances of a successful summit.

For climbers choosing the 7-day itinerary, an additional acclimatization day can be spent at Horombo Hut for even better altitude adjustment.

Optional Hiking Altitude: Approximately 4,300m
Overnight: Horombo Hut (3,720m)

5-Day Route Option

Climbers on the 5-day itinerary skip the acclimatization day and continue directly to Kibo Hut on Day 3.

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,703m)

Today’s trek crosses the vast alpine desert known as the Saddle, a barren plateau stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and dramatic as you approach Kibo Hut, the final stop before the summit attempt.

After an early dinner, spend the evening resting and preparing your equipment for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Kibo Hut (4,703m)

Day 5: Kibo Hut (4,703m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Descend to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Around midnight, begin your summit attempt under a sky filled with stars. The trail climbs steeply to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim before continuing along the rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable experience, rewarding climbers with spectacular views across the glaciers and surrounding plains. After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut.

Summit Altitude: 5,895m
Total Trekking Time: 12–16 hours
Overnight: Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Day 6: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Marangu Gate (1,860m)

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the moorland and rainforest zones to Marangu Gate. Upon arrival, receive your summit certificate and celebrate your accomplishment with the mountain crew before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha.

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland and Rainforest
